Farm family in land battle with government

A family whose dairy farm is on Vermont’s border with Canada is hoping it can work out an alternative to the federal government’s plan to take 10 acres of their land for an expanded border station.

The Rainville family of Morse’s Line has enlisted the help of Sen. Patrick Leahy in their fight with the Department of Homeland Security and the Army Corps of Engineers.

The government agencies are eyeing a $16 million project to upgrade and expand the Morse’s Line border station – a project that the government says will require taking 10 acres of prime farmland from the Rainvilles.

Family members question the need for the expansion, telling Vermont Public Radio that there’s very little traffic that passes through the border post.
