Farm census: New England farm numbers on the rise

The number of farms is on the rise across New England.

That’s according to the federal government’s 2007 Census of Agriculture, which shows there were 33,000 farms in New England in 2007, up from 28,000 farms in 2002. The U.S. Department of Agriculture conducts the farm census every five years.

Maine has more farms – 8,000 – than any other New England state, followed by Massachusetts, Vermont, Connecticut, New Hampshire and Rhode Island. Every state experienced an increase in the number of farms between 2002 and 2007.

As for farm acreage, that’s up too. The farm census says New England farms totaled more than 4 million acres in 2007, an increase of nearly 50,000 acres from 2002.
