The family of a man killed by Brattleboro police plans to file a lawsuit against the town next week. Lawyers for the family of Robert Woodward will announce the lawsuit at a news conference Monday.
The 37-year-old Woodward was distraught and agitated when he went to the All Souls Unitarian-Universalist Church last month. Witnesses say Woodward carried a small knife but apparently did not threaten to harm anyone but himself. Two police officers who were called to the scene shot Woodward seven times. He died later at a hospital.
A spokesman for a law firm representing the family says a suit will be filed Monday. The lawsuit will charge that the police improperly used deadly force and failed to adequately train its officers.
