The company seeking to take over Verizon’s landline business in northern New England is pledging to make a big investment in rural Internet access if state regulators approve the deal.

FairPoint Communications says it would spend more than $13 million on expanding broadband Internet access in New Hampshire if regulators in Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont approve the $2.7 billion deal.

Walter Leach, FairPoint’s executive vice president, says the biggest broadband investment in New Hampshire would be in the North Country.

FairPoint last month promised to spend $13.8 million on broadband upgrades in Vermont. It hasn’t yet released details of broadband expansion plans for Maine.
