The town of Fair Haven is going to use an unexpected budget surplus to improve community infrastructure and invest in youth.

About a year ago the town discovered it had an extra $573,000 it wasn’t aware of.

On Tuesday, voters were asked to approve plans for some of the money.

The largest single chunk of the money, almost $208,000, will be used to pave and repair town roads.

Additional funds will be used to help construct new basketball courts, install security lighting near the recreation building and other recreational projects.

The surplus funds not appropriated will be placed in a newly created emergency fund.
