Essex Elementary will remove security system

School officials in Essex have removed a security system from a school where a shooting occurred last year.

The system, which required punching in a code to enter through the Essex Elementary School’s front doors, was installed weeks after two teachers were shot, one fatally, in August of 2006.

Superintendent Jim Fitzgerald says he made the decision to remove the security system earlier this month.

He says the town’s two other elementary schools did not have such security systems and that he wanted to be consistent. Fitzgerald says he’s heard no complaints from parents so far.
