The Department of Health is holding a meeting tonight for people living in the emergency planning zones around the Vermont Yankee Nuclear Power plant.

The meeting is to remind residents that potassium iodide tablets distributed in 2002 are about to expire. Staff from the health department and Emergency Management will discuss their plans for distributing new tablets.

In the event of a nuclear emergency, potassium iodide can block exposure to radioactive iodine, if the drug is taken correctly and in a timely manner.

The public meeting takes place tonight at 7pm in Brattleboro, at the American Legion Hall. The six towns in the emergency planning zone are Brattleboro, Dummerston, Guilford, Halifax, Marlboro and Vernon.
