Elected officials to go without pay raises

The Douglas administration plan to freeze salaries for about 350 executive branch employees who make more than $60,000 a year has prompted all but one of the Vermont’s statewide elected officials to forgo raises in the coming fiscal year.

State Treasurer Jeb Spaulding, Attorney General William Sorrell, Auditor Tom Salmon and Lieutenant Governor Brian Dubie say they’ll go without the raises. Secretary of State Deb Markowitz told the Burlington Free Press yesterday that she’d just heard of the plan and hadn’t made a decision yet.

The pay freeze was ordered because state revenues are slowing down due to the poor state of the economy.

Spaulding says it’s appropriate that the state’s most high-paid officials tighten their belts when others are being asked to the same.
