East-west highway discussed for northern New England

The Federal Highway Administration has agreed to undertake a comprehensive study of transportation needs along the northeast border with Canada.

Maine Senator Susan Collins says the study should include an assessment of a possible east-west highway that would cut across Maine. The issue of an east-west highway from New Brunswick through New Hampshire and Vermont to Quebec has been discussed for years.

Collins says the northeast is by far the largest geographic region east of Chicago without an east-west interstate highway. Many people say the area needs such a highway to experience economic growth.
