(Host) An eagle breeding program in Addison County reached a milestone today. Three of six young birds took flight for the first time early this morning.

Several weeks ago, the eaglets were brought in from other states to the Dead Creek Wildlife area as part of an effort to establish a breeding population of bald eagles in Vermont.

Amy Alfieri is with the Fish and Wildlife Department. She says the first eagle flew out of its nest box at sunrise this morning:

(Alfieri) “I’m just thrilled. It’s very moving to watch and it brought me pretty close to tears to see that first flight.”

(Host) Alfieri says the young birds aren’t as agile or acrobatic as adult eagles but they are off to a great start.
