(Host) Lt. Governor Brian Dubie says a lot of Vermonters are encouraging him to run for Governor next year.

Dubie says he’s tried to be a consensus builder at the Statehouse and that his style of leadership is what Vermont needs to face the challenges of the future.

VPRs Bob Kinzel reports.

(Kinzel) It’s been two weeks since Governor Jim Douglas announced that he won’t seek re-election in 2010.  During this time period, Dubie has gone to a number of public events and he says there’s been a lot of positive feedback about him running for governor.

Dubie says he has a moderate style of leadership and he feels the state could use this approach after what he says was a very partisan legislative session last winter:

(Dubie) "I’ve really tried to serve as a consensus builder and as someone who listens well and shares and tries to keep emotions and ideology out of solving problems I’m starting to feel like there is an alignment of my experience my temperament and utilizing those to confront the challenges that our state faces."

(Kinzel) And Dubie says this factor is a strong motivating influence as he considers running for governor:

(Dubie) "That type of challenge is personally appealing to me and trying to do a realistic assessment of who I am and what my track record has been either on a school board or Lt. Governor that’s what leads me to really become close to making a decision about stepping up and running for the office of Governor for the state of Vermont."

(Kinzel) Dubie says Vermont’s next governor will need to do more than follow the fiscal policies of Governor Douglas – that’s because he thinks the state’s financial problems are growing worse:

(Dubie) "We’re going to need to have some really bold new thinking so this is not to carry on a legacy this is to chart new ground to come up with bold and creative solution to some of these really significant challenges."

(Kinzel) Most other potential Republican candidates say they’ll wait for Dubie to make up his mind and that they’ll defer to him if he decides to run.

Dubie says he expects to make a final decision in the next two weeks.
