Governor Jim Douglas tried to stop his hometown of Middlebury from voting on a resolution calling for the impeachment of President Bush and Vice President Cheney.
But he relented when it became clear that Middlebury voters wanted to discuss the proposal.
Although he’s governor, Douglas also is the moderator of the Middlebury town meeting.
He initially ruled that there could be no vote on the impeachment resolution and another calling for the immediate withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq.
He reasoned that the resolutions were brought up under new business and that meant there could be no vote.
The Rutland Herald and Times Argus report that Douglas changed his position after voters insisted on having their say.
Both resolutions passed by wide margins.
