Douglas embarks on listening tour

(Host) Governor Jim Douglas served up coffee and chatted with diners at a South Burlington restaurant this morning as he embarked on a listening tour of the state.

He says his "Set the Agenda Tour" is designed to help him plan his priorities for the upcoming legislative session.

The tour is scheduled to take Douglas to diners and county fairs. He’s even planning to deliver Meals on Wheels in an effort to meet with more people.

(Douglas) "This is a chance for Vermonters to talk to me to give me their ideas. Very frankly, if politicians in Montpelier talked less and listened more, I think we’d be a lot more successful in advancing the priorities of the people of Vermont."

(Host) House Speaker Gaye Symington says she’s done similar tours and welcomes the governor’s initiative.

But she says voters want the governor and the Legislature to do something more than not just talk.

(Symington) "So I hope that the listening tour will result in the governor’s coming back and willing to tackle those kinds of tough challenges together with the Legislature this winter."

(Host) Douglas says he expects to continue with his tour through next month. He says he hopes legislators will participate in some of the meetings.
