Douglas, delegation agree: Farm bill veto is a bad idea

Governor Jim Douglas is joining the state’s congressional delegation in saying President Bush’s veto of this year’s farm bill was a bad idea.

Douglas, Senators Patrick Leahy and Bernie Sanders and Congressman Peter Welch, all say the bill contains provisions that will be helpful to dairy farmers and other segments of Vermont agriculture.

The House voted to override the veto yesterday, and Welch voted with the majority. But the bill’s future is in question after a printing error sent the wrong version of the bill to the White House.

The wide-ranging bill contains farm subsidies, food stamps for the poor and energy provisions.
