Douglas announces barn preservation grants

Eager to preserve historic barns, the state is putting its money where its mouth is.

Governor Jim Douglas yesterday announced $209,000 in grants from the Vermont Division of Historic Preservation that will help 23 farms preserve barns.

Douglas says the barns are important to both agriculture and tourism, since they’re key structures on farms and big attractions for photographers and visitors.

The grants, up to $10,000, provide matching funds for farmers doing repairs to barn roofs, foundations and other components.

Douglas announced the grants during an appearance at the Von Trapp dairy farm in Waitsfield.
