Douglas adds to criticism of controversial teddy bear

Governor Jim Douglas says he agrees with those who see a new stuffed animal from the Vermont Teddy Bear Company as insensitive toward the mentally ill.

On Thursday, Douglas stopped short of asking that the company take its “Crazy for You” bear off the market, saying he didn’t want to tell a private company what to do. But Douglas says he wishes the bear hadn’t been put on the market in the first place.

The bear wears a strait jacket and comes with commitment papers. Mental health advocates have called it insensitive and tasteless marketing. The company says the bear is a Valentine’s Day offering and will be discontinued after next month. The company issued an apology to anyone offended by the bear.
