Diocese still not in compliance on abuse audit

A new audit has found Vermont’s Catholic Diocese still not in full compliance with standards designed to prevent sexual abuse by priests.

But the man who oversaw the audit says he believes the Roman Catholic Diocese of Burlington, which includes the entire state, was making a good fair effort to comply.

The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops issued the standards in 2002, saying priests, educators, employees, students and volunteers needed to go through training designed to prevent abuse.

The Gavin Group found that the diocese of Vermont and the diocese serving the Cincinnati area had not trained all of their volunteers.

Officials with the Vermont diocese say the goal is to finish the training by the middle of the year.
