Democrats have unanimously nominated Rep. Shap Smith of Morrisville speaker of the Vermont House.

At the Statehouse on Saturday, Smith urged his fellow legislators to focus on the future of Vermont as they make challenging financial and policy decisions this session.

Smith was the sole candidate in the race, after two others dropped out last week.

The House will elect its speaker when at the start of the 2009-1010 session next month. Rep. Steve Adams of Hartland, the Republican leader, also is running but his party holds just 48 of the 150 seats in the House.

The Democratic caucus also elected Rep. Floyd Nease of Johnson as majority leader and Rep. Lucy Leriche of Hardwick as assistant majority leader at its weekend meeting.
