Democrats criticize Republicans on energy policy

(Host) Vermont Democrats say Republicans have done too little to adopt a sustainable energy policy. The Democrats say they are raising the energy issue with potential voters as they conduct a registration drive in Burlington.

East Montpelier Representative Tony Klein chairs the House Natural Resources and Energy Committee. Klein says that the Douglas administration has failed to develop an energy policy beyond relying on the Vermont Yankee nuclear plant.

But Rob Roper, the chairman of the Vermont Republican Party, says Douglas’s energy policy is focused on making sure electricity stays affordable.

Roper said Douglas wants to consider all sources of generation, including wind. But he said wind power cannot be relied on to produce electricity all the time, and therefore can not replace Vermont Yankee.
