Allegations of bad faith are flying from both sides in the debate over the elimination of 400 vacant jobs from Vermont state government.

Lawmakers and the Vermont State Employees Union are charging the that Gov. Jim Douglas’ administration is shifting positions around to hide the real nature of the positions being cut — including social worker jobs.

The administration replies that it’s the legislators and the union who are being dishonest about the matter, and that state government actually has been adding social workers recently.

The controversy erupted this week after the VSEA used the state public records act to obtain internal e-mails among state officials about the position reductions.
