Violet Coffin, a longtime Vermont Democratic activist and arts advocate, has passed away. She was 87.

Coffin died at her Strafford home yesterday.

She was chairwoman of Vermont’s Democratic Party in 1985, after serving as chair of the Strafford and Orange County committees.

She also led a delegation to the Democratic National Covention in Atlanta for the Michael Dukakis nomination in 1988 and for Bill Clinton in New York City in 1992.

Democratic National Committee chairman Howard Dean says Coffin was a loyal Vermonter who single-handedly kept the state Democratic party together as chairwoman, and whose work touched the lives of countless others.
