Defense to argue Williams was insane at time of shooting

Defense lawyers for Essex shooting suspect Christopher Williams now plan to argue that he was insane at the time of the 2006 rampage that left two dead and two wounded.

Williams’ lead attorney, Margaret Jansch says the defense plans to have three witnesses testify about Williams’ mental state.

Jansch had said in March that she could not find any experts to talk about Williams’ mental health.

A number of deadlines have passed for using the insanity defense.

Prosecutors are challenging the strategy. A hearing is planned for Friday.

State lawyers have filed paperwork to prevent one of the witnesses from testifying, arguing that raising the insanity issue less than two months before the trial could cause delays.
