Count Peacham among the small Vermont towns trying to figure out what to do about declining enrollments at the local school.

More than 60 residents of the town in Caledonia County turned out yesterday for a discussion of various plans designed to repond to the issue.

Peacham Elementary School has 43 students in kindergarten through sixth grade, which is actually up by seven since last March.

Many Vermont towns with schools that small are struggling with rising per-pupil costs and concern that they are unable to achieve economies of scale.

Options under consideration in Peacham include closing the school and sending students to neighboring schools, turning the town school into a private one and maintaining the status quo.
