Debate over school bullying workshop

There’s a debate in Swanton about whether a group for gay and lesbian youth should present a workshop about bullying at the local high school.

About 75 people attended a School Board meeting on the subject last night at Missisquoi Union High School.

They were about evenly split over whether the group Outright Vermont should be allowed to make the presentations.

Neither the superintendent nor the School Board indicated the workshops would be cancelled.

The planned presentation has been strongly opposed by a conservative talk radio host who appears on radio stations in Saint Albans and Waterbury.

A number of parents said gay and lesbian issues had no place in schools. Supporters say they think the presentations would be educational.
