Democratic presidential candidate Howard Dean says the New England dairy compact could be a national model for agriculture policy. In a telephone conference call with New England reporters, Dean said similar approaches could be used for pricing grain and other agricultural commodities.
The dairy compact guaranteed farmers in the Northeast a minimum price for their milk. It was funded through a surcharge on dairy processors.
