Democratic presidential candidate Howard Dean is asking Burlington officials to waive penalties and interest on his late tax bill. City officials are scheduled to take up the matter on Monday night along with requests from six other local taxpayers.
At issue is $76 in penalties and interest for a late tax bill paid earlier this summer. Dean says he submitted his property tax payment for the entire year on July 16, well ahead of the August deadline. But the former governor says he learned there was a problem when he checked his bank statement for July and noticed that the property tax payment had not cleared.
Deputy campaign manager Bob Rogan says Dean will abide by the board’s decision.
