CVPS plans first major solar project

Central Vermont Public Service plans to build the first major solar project in Vermont to feed energy exclusively onto the power grid.

VPR’s Nina Keck reports.

(Keck)   CVPS says the 50-kilowatt project will be located just off Route 7 in Rutland Town.  It will include 265 solar panels – each three by five feet wide.   While some individual home owners and businesses in the state utilize solar panels for some or all of their power, CVPS says any power generated by this project will go directly onto the power grid.  CVPS Spokesman Steve Costello.

(Costello) "First and foremost it’s going to give us a lot of information about how solar works on a larger scale and what the opportunities might be for more large scale solar and renewable energy in the future."

(Keck) Costello says they plan to host visits from thousands of school children each year as well as have students from the nearby Stafford Technical Center assist with the installation.    If permitting goes well, he says work on the 400-thousand dollar project will begin next spring.

For VPR News, I’m Nina Keck in Rutland.
