Crews To Use More Brine On Winter Roads

(Host) Winter road crews in Vermont will be using more brine instead of salt this year, and crews will be given more discretion about how much salt and brine to apply.

That’s the word from Governor Peter Shumlin, who joined transportation officials (today/on Friday)  in announcing the new measures. Shumlin also used the opportunity to urge motorists to slow down in winter conditions, especially around snowplows.

(Shumlin) "Our hard working men and women at AOT can’t keep our roads safe, if drivers act like lunatics. So use good common sense during the winter."

(Host) Officials say they’re telling snowplow crews that they won’t be second-guessed if they want to apply more salt and brine to roads.

Shumlin says the people on the ground know best how much of the material is needed.
