Vermont prosecutors say a town clerk has been charged with felony tax evasion.

Cynthia Diaz is the town clerk in Coventry, and is charged with five counts each of failing to file income tax returns and failure to pay income taxes.

She pleaded not guilty to the charges in Vermont District Court in Barre and was released.

Assistant Attorney General Robert Menzel says Diaz didn’t file state income tax returns in Vermont for the years 2003 through 2008 and owes the state about $10,000. She couldn’t be reached for comment Thursday.
