Officials in Middlebury say the cost of cleaning up last week’s train derailment will top $100,000.

Vermont Rail Systems President David Wulfson says the cost of hiring a Pennsylvania company to right the cars that went off the tracks alone could cost more than $100,000.

There are also more than 220 other claims that range from hotel rooms to lost time at work for those displaced by the derailment.

The Oct. 22 derailment of 18 cars in the 22-car train prompted the evacuation of much of Middlebury’s central business district.

Some of the cars were carrying gasoline. A small fire was quickly extinguished.
