Corrections could bring probation to Middlebury

The Vermont Corrections Department will reconsider the closing of the Probation and Parole office in Middlebury.

The office was closed earlier this year because of budget cuts, but Corrections officials met Monday with a number of Addison County officials to discuss the situation.

Corrections Commissioner Andy Pallito says closing the office should save Corrections about $100,000 a year.

Probation officers now work out of the Middlebury court house two days a week. And offenders are monitored from Burlington and Rutland.

But some area residents say they don’t feel as safe without the probation officers in the community.
