After 20 years on the drawing boards, a bike path is finally about to become reality in St. Johnsbury.
Construction starts Friday on the Three Rivers Transportation Path, which will run for a mile and a half along the former Lamoille Valley rail line and proposed Lamoille Valley Rail Trail.
Town Manager Ralph Nelson says the $3.5 million dollar project will be mostly complete by year’s end.
Plans for the St. Johnsbury section include installation of a parking area off South Main Street, removal of a bridge, landscaping, lighting and retaining walls.
The Caledonian Record reports that the federal government is paying 80 percent of the cost and the state 10 percent.
