A Vermont constable who pleaded guilty to neglecting his duties will pay a $500 fine for it.

Sixty-two-year-old Dale Messier is the town constable in Swanton. He filed a return of service September 2 stating that he’d served a notice of hearing on a Fairfield resident who was involved in a civil suit. A subsequent investigation showed that he hadn’t served it in person, he left it in a mailbox at the person’s former home. The notice was found by the current resident, who sent it to Vermont Superior Court.

Messier pleaded guilty earlier this month to a criminal misdemeanor – neglect of duty.
