(Host) A Vermont-based energy company is consolidating its operations that will result in a workforce reduction.

The parent company of Northern Power Systems said today it’s combining Northern Power with its other subsidiary based in Connecticut.

The reorganization will result in a 20% reduction in the company’s overall workforce, and will affect roughly 60 positions.

Rob Smart speaks for Northern Power. He says most of the people who will be laid off work in Vermont. Northern Power currently operates two facilities in the state, but that will change with the consolidation.

(Smart) “What we are in effect doing is, after the reduction in workforce, with the majority of the 60 people who are being let go today, the remaining employees in Vermont will be re-locating from Waitsfield to the Barre facility and we’ll be closing down the Waitsfield facility, and basically consolidating all our resources in Barre. We’re not moving out of state.”

(Host) Northern Power specializes in power generation systems for commercial office buildings and for remote locations such as oil platforms.

Rob Smart says that consolidating the Vermont and Connecticut businesses into one company will help eliminate overlap and make sales and marketing efforts more effective.
