Vermont’s congressional delegation is protesting the loss of a contract for Granite Industries of Vermont to produce 20,000 memorials a year for the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Granite Industries says it lost the contract to produce memorials for the nation’s veteran cemeteries despite the fact that it was the low bidder with an excellent record.

The delegation said they were concerned that there wasn’t an adequate explanation for the change to a Mississippi company that would charge more.

They said Vermont has supplied headstones for America’s soldiers since the Battle of Gettysburg.

The letter to the department was written by Senators Patrick Leahy and Jim Jeffords and Congressman Bernie Sanders.
