A Colchester police officer fired for his handling of a traffic stop involving a Burlington police sergeant wants his job back.

Dale J. Trombley has appealed his dismissal.

Trombley was fired for failing to charge an off-duty Burlington police sergeant stopped on suspicion of drunken driving in November.

Police say Trombley stopped off-duty Burlington Police Sgt. Donald Lilja, who was driving an unmarked Burlington Police Department vehicle and was not subjected to alcohol screening or charged with driving while intoxicated.

Last month Lilja resigned from the Burlington force.

Chittenden County State’s Attorney T.J. Donovan suspended prosecution of all criminal cases that involved Trombley as the lead witness. Donovan has also dismissed two drunken-driving cases in which the officer was the lead investigator.

Donovan says he is investigating whether criminal charges should be filed against either officer.
