A summer camp for children with cancer is going to have to find a new home.

Camp Ta-Kum-Ta, which is located on the shores of Lake Champlain in Colchester, has been notified by its landlord, the Roman Catholic Diocese of Burlington, that the property may be sold. The Diocese, which was recently hit with a $8.7 million jury verdict in a priest sex cases, says it’s evaluating its holdings in hopes of avoiding any action that would burden parishes, schools and charitable entities.

Ted Kessler, director of Camp Ta-Kum-Ta, says the children who are used to going to the camp will be devastated.

Camp Ta-Kum-Ta, which has been using the property for 23 years, will have its last camp at the Colchester site in August. But organizers are already scouting possible locations for a long-term lease or purchase arrangement of property that’s within an hour’s drive of Fletcher Allen Health Care and suitable for use as a camp.
