There’s been no shortage of snow this year, but officials at Cochran’s Ski Area in Richmond are celebrating the installation of a new snowmaking system all the same.

The small ski area, which is run by a family that includes former Olympic gold medalist Barbara Ann Cochran, limped into the 21st century using a jury-rigged snowmaking system built by family patriarch Mickey Cochran.

Now it has installed $400,000 worth of state-of-the-art snowmaking equipment that it hopes will cover the slopes when nature doesn’t.

A series of activities were planned today to celebrate the completion of the system.
