Clinton County leaders are looking to undertake a major expansion of the 3-year-old Plattsburgh International Airport.

The airport opened in June 2007 at the site of the former Plattsburgh Air Force Base, which closed in 1995. The new airport replaced the much smaller Clinton County Airport.

The Plattsburgh Press-Republican reports that the number of people flying out of the new airport has grown from 43,945 in 2008 to 95,260 last year. The former County Airport used to fly about 2,500 people a year.

The most attractive service at the airport has been direct flights to southern destinations in Florida and South Carolina. Many of the travelers come from Canada.

County officials hope construction of expanded facilities will begin in 2012 and be finished in 2013.
