City to decide if Al-Jazeera should stay on cable

Two citizen committees that oversee Burlington Telecom’s cable television offerings will decide if the system should continue to broadcast the Arab television network Al-Jazeera.

Some complain that Al-Jazeera’s programming is an affront to patriotic Americans and shouldn’t be available on Burlington Telecom because its ideology is contrary to American efforts to put down threats from al-Qaida or the Taliban.

But others argue Burlington residents should make their own decision on whether the information on Al-Jazeera is useful.

Earlier this month, Burlington Telecom General Manager Chris Burns decided to drop Al-Jazeera.

But Mayor Bob Kiss says the issue warrants a broader discussion.
