A yearlong battle over the future of Intervale Compost in Burlington is nearing conclusion, with the Chittenden Solid Waste District paying $170,000 to take the operation over on Monday.

The solid waste district agreed to take over the compost operation after it was charged with environmental violations.

The nonprofit Intervale Center had agreed to address the violations, but decided it was too costly.

Under the takeover, the solid waste district paid $10,000 into a new state archaeology fund established to address concerns that American Indian artifacts may be in the soil of the Winooski River flood plain.
