Chittenden cancels credit purchases on ATM cards

(Host) About 15,000 Chittenden Bank customers have gotten a surprise the past few days when they tried to make purchases with their ATM cards.

They discovered that the bank had canceled their ability to use the cards for credit purchases.

Chittenden Senior Vice President Kathy Schirling says the bank’s customers were affected by a security problem at Hannaford’s supermarkets.

(Schirling) “It’s not a new security breach. It’s in regards to the Hannaford breach that happened a few months ago. What we’re doing at this time, is we’ve seen a little bit of activity on those cards. There are approximately 15,000 cards that we’ll be reissuing. But that’s only a small portion of our debit card population. So it is only those cards that are affected.”

(Host) For now, Chittenden customers will be able to use their cards only for debit transactions. Once new cards are issued, customers will be able to use them for credit purchases.

Schirling says the changes were made to the affected accounts late Thursday. She says the bank has been notifying customers.
