The organizers of a party to celebrate the re-opening of the Lake Champlain Bridge have postponed the festivities until May 2012.

The Lake Champlain Bridge Coalition had been planning a party for mid- October just a week after the bridge was scheduled to re-open on October 9th.

But co-chair Karen Hennessey says there’s too much uncertainty about whether the bridge will open to traffic on time, so they’ve decided to move the events to next spring.

The bridge construction has experienced delays after underwater obstructions were hit while placing new support piers, and record flooding this spring has also delayed the project.

The contractor building the bridge has been granted a 65 day schedule adjustment by the New York State Department of Transportation.

Transportation officials say they’re in talks with the contractor to determine an opening date.
