The Vermont Chamber of Commerce has announced the winner of its "citizen of the year" award. And it goes to Governor Jim Douglas.

In its announcement today, the Chamber cites Douglas for his nearly 40 years of service to Vermont, and – as governor – for his focus on strengthening the state’s economy.

Chamber president, Betsy Bishop, says the Governor’s success is related to – quote – "his ability to connect with Vermonters, and understand their needs."

Douglas began his political career in 1980 as Secretary of State. He became State Treasurer in 1994, and began serving as Governor in 2002.

The chamber has been giving the annual award for nearly 50 years.

Last year’s "Citizen of the Year" award went to Ed Colodny of Burlington.
