CCTA could trim service, raise fares

The Chittenden County Transportation Agency is considering a plan to trim public bus services and raise fares on a Burlington to Middlebury commuter route.

The proposals drew little criticism during a hearing Thursday at the Burlington City Hall.

The changes would save the agency about $40,000 and help pay off a $250,000 deficit created in part by rising fuel costs.

In addition to raising the cost of the Burlington to Middlebury route from $3 to $4, the agency is considering cutting a number of routes.

General manager Chris Cole says CCTA is a local agency and it would be difficult to expand routes unless the Legislature were to authorize it to become a regional transit company.
