Vermont Roman Catholic Bishop Salvatore Matano celebrated the first mass Sunday in a newly built church in Randolph.

The services at Our Lady of the Angels church were the first time in 15 years that a new building has been dedicated in the Vermont diocese.

An overflow crowd turned out for the official opening of the building, which is east of Randolph village.

It replaces a much smaller church near downtown.

A spokeswoman says there are no other new churches under construction in the diocese. There has been pressure within the Catholic church around the region to close churches.

Spokeswoman Gloria Gibson says there are internal discussions within the Catholic church about future plans.

No decisions have been made about whether to rebuild a small church in Mount Holly that burned just after Christmas.
