The University of Vermont announced Thursday a professional education program for people who work in the captive insurance industry. The program is in collaboration with the Vermont Captive Insurance Association, the largest professional group of its kind in the country.

Captive insurance organizations include insurance companies that are owned and controlled by the people they insure. The International Center for Captive Insurance Education plans to provide conferences and seminars on industry topics, as well as a professional certification program. The center was started due to concern that a critical lack of training could damage the growth of the industry.

Vermont has more captive insurance companies than any other state. Industry officials say VCIA’s prominent role in the industry makes Vermont the only state that could host such a program.
