Vermont State Police and firefighters are searching Lake Champlain for a man missing since the canoe he was in capsized near Highgate Springs.

Capt. Daniel Troidl says two men were in the boat when it went down yesterday in waters off Old Dock Road. One was picked up by a passing boat.

The other man, whose name hasn’t been released, is still being sought.

Troidl says police have been told the man’s a strong swimmer, and they hope he’s either keeping himself afloat on the lake or has already been picked up by another boater.

In addition to Vermont State Police, the U.S. Border Patrol, U.S. Coast Guard and firefighters from North Hero, Swanton and Alburgh were searching.
