A veteran Republican senator from the Northeast Kingdom has landed a seat on the powerful Senate Appropriations Committee. Senator Julius Canns of Caledonia County takes a seat that previously was held by his district mate. But former Senator Robert Ide resigned from the Senate last year to take a position in Governor Jim Douglas’ administration.
The 80-year-old Canns has spent 12 years in the Senate and has spent a lot of that time on the Institutions Committee. With his new post on the Appropriations Committee, he will have a hand in helping to write the state budget.
