Candace Page’s Favorite Outdoor Places

Environmental reporter Candace Page recently spoke with VPR’s Jane Lindholm about a few of her favorite outdoor places.  Here are some of them.

  • Volunteer to pull water chestnuts while exploring Lake Champlain. Candy did her volunteer stint on East Creek.
  • Learn more about bird life on the Four Brother Islands (remember, viewing is allowed only from offshore). The four islands lie off Willsboro, N.Y. and would be most easily reached in a boat with a motor. There is a boat ramp at the base of Willsboro bay. The islands lie in the broad lake, where wind and waves can create dangerous conditions for small craft.
  • For anyone interested in exploring the nooks and crannies of Lake Champlain, Candy highly recommends the online journals of two Vermont kayakers, Margy Holden and Kathy Frank, who have circumnavigated the lake and written about everything they’ve seen.
  • The Nature Conservancy has a page on their fascinating Helen Buckner Preserve, including information for visitors.
  • In the mountains: Here are some photographs posted by members of the Green Mountain Club’s Laraway section. They include the views Candy talked about with Jane Lindholm. For hiking directions, refer to the Green Mountain Club’s trail guides.
  • Belvidere Mountain: Candy usually climbs from the parking lot on Route 118. Here’s a hiker’s guide to the mountain, complete with photographs of an asbestos mine.
